Triple Bunk Bed Plans with Drawers or Trundle

Have a large family and want to maximize your sleeping space?  Then take a look at this Triple or Quadruple bunk bed plan!  If you have 9-foot or higher ceilings, then you can sleep 3 or 4 in the space of one twin size bed.  This triple bunk has space underneath for you to put either storage drawers or a trundle.  In fact, you could put the trundle and then decide if you want to use it as a bed or storage!

Bunk bed plans and hardware kit (with free shipping) to build an extra-tall triple bunk bed plan that holds three twin size mattresses. This 20+ page comprehensive plan explains how to select lumber, cut, sand, drill, apply finish and assemble a beautiful wooden bunk bed that is as solid and sturdy as those built by Bunk Beds Unlimited. It comes with a store-ready quick shopping list so that you can head right out and purchase the materials you need to get started. This plan makes use of widely available easy to obtain off-the-shelf lumber and materials. You can build it even if you have little or no woodworking experience using a circular saw, an electric drill, a power sander and a few hand tools. By purchasing our plan set you can build your own Bunk Bed saving hundreds of dollars. It is a great first woodworking project or family project.

This plan covers construction of the triple bunk bed alone, or with storage drawers or a trundle underneath. This triple bunk bed measures 84 inches tall, by 42 1/2" wide, by 81" long and sleeps three or four in a room with 9 foot or higher ceilings. This bunk holds three standard twin mattresses. IIf putting a trundle underneath, this bunk becomes a Quadruple Bunk Bed sleeping four people!  The trundle measures 74” in length and holds a twin mattress that is 68” in length. The headroom space in each bunk is approximately as follows: upper bunk mattress to ceiling 28 - 29", middle bunk mattress to bunkie board on top bunk 20 - 21", lower bunk 18 - 19" (*please note that use of very thick or pillow top mattresses is not recommended with any bunk bed). The finished bed will stand up to daily use for many years and continue to look nice. Many of the beds we have manufactured have been in daily use in hotels, camps, shelters and other institutions for 15 years or more, supporting adult weight and still look great. They are tough. See our sturdy bunk bed plans page for details on weight limits of our bunk plans.

The hardware kit has all hardware needed to complete the bunk bed only, or bunk with storage drawers or trundle bed underneath.  It includes all fasteners and black plated furniture lags that give the bunk a professional appearance. Additional hardware such as wooden drawer handles and heavy-duty carpet casters for the storage or trundle drawers is available by ordering the bed and drawers hardware kit. For details on our high quality hardware, see our page on bunk bed plans hardware and the page describing the difference in hardware store hardware vs our decorative furniture hardware.

Need to price your project? Please see the materials lists below. A call to the lumber vendor in your area will get you a very good estimate. Our hardware kits are higher quality, much more convenient and a better price than if you purchase the items at your local home center or hardware store. If you start building today, we most likley have the hardware to you before you get to are ready for it. (*Please note that the lumber is not included in the hardware kit.*)

Free shipping to the 50 United States (others write for details).

Please note that drawer and trundle plans are available free on our free bunk bed plans drawers and trundles page.

Too many littles in a mobile home

Posted by Joanna on 26th Jun 2020

I bought the plan hoping to put drawers underneath but with low ceilings in our mobile home, we ended up leaving out the drawers and adjusting everything down a few inches. The bed fits almost exactly with only a few inches to spare at either end between the walls so we added an extra post on the front with some short ladder rungs. It was really easy to adjust the plan for our needs and wonderful to actually have that plan to start from. We were also so pleased to see that our girls could even sleep end to end in one bunk while we waited for the other two mattresses to arrive. They are so excited to have room for their cousins and friends to sleep over soon! Thank you so much for making this available!

    Triple Bunk in NYC apartment

Posted by Ryan on 1st Jul 2015

Trying to have children in New York City is tricky enough, but with these bunks, we have space and to spare. I built these bunks in our alley and assembled them in our apartment in Manhattan. I chose this plan because it would give my children a bed they could use for years, but also that they would have a fun and strong play set in their room. With the trundle, we could fit four kids in their room. I love the ladder structure on the ends and the compact design. My only modification was that I did not use lag bolts for the support beams and the storage drawers. I used them for the bed boards because of their strength and also for bringing the bed into a flush structure. Lag bolts were too much and too expensive. However, I'm sure they look great and work great. Otherwise, I cannot thank you enough for designing this. My children love it and my neighbors are really, really impressed.
